And he's already worked through the obvious answers. The event apps are fine if the event uses one. The personal website feels like handing someone your address after a good conversation. The Linktree gives options, but too many options and nobody picks one. Then there's the NFC card market, which he's calling vendor lock-in dressed up in gold plastic, and he's right. Two dollars gets you a blank card, you write your own link, done. His actual ask is about design. What makes a digital card effective at starting one conversation, not impressive at displaying ten options. And he floats a specific interface, a slim homepage that expands into nested contact options, like an accordion.
The accordion idea is interesting because it's trying to solve the right problem. Most digital card pages fail because they put the decision on the recipient. Here are eight ways to reach me, pick one. And the recipient is standing in a hallway holding a coffee, they're not going to pick. They're going to glance, scroll, and bounce. The page has about ten seconds before they're gone.
Ten seconds. That's the number that keeps showing up. And the top button gets forty to sixty percent of whatever taps happen.
Right. So the design question isn't what to include, it's what to make impossible to miss. Daniel's instinct about one initial touchpoint is the whole game. The card is a handshake, not a brochure. You're not transferring a contact database, you're creating a reason to continue the conversation later.
Which is why I've always thought the WhatsApp number is the strongest card in Israel. It's not a profile, it's a thread. You hand someone a number, they message you, now you're both in each other's chat list. That's a relationship that survives the event.
And the message itself becomes the card. You send a follow-up with your name, your site, whatever context is relevant. But here's the thing. That only works if the number is the thing you lead with. If the page has a WhatsApp button, a LinkedIn button, a portfolio button, an email button, and a calendar link, the WhatsApp button is just one of five. The paradox of choice kicks in and the recipient does nothing.
So the nested accordion Daniel's describing is actually a way to have both. The top level is one thing. One button, one action. Tap to message me on WhatsApp, or tap to save my contact. And then below that, collapsed, are the other options for the people who actually want them.
And the data backs that up. Single call-to-action pages convert at thirteen and a half percent. Three links drops it to ten and a half. That's a thirty percent drop just from adding two more options. Every extra link buries the one that matters.
Thirteen and a half percent. What does that even mean for a networking card? Is that the percentage of visitors who tap the button?
In the link-in-bio world, yes. It's the tap rate. And for a networking card, the tap is the whole point. Someone scans your QR code, they land on the page, they tap the one thing, you're connected. If they land and scroll and leave, you've lost them.
So the accordion has to be designed so the collapsed options don't even look like options at first glance. The eye lands on the primary action. The rest is visually secondary. Maybe a small text link that says something like other ways to reach me.
And that's where most implementations go wrong. They build the accordion but they make all the sections look equally important. Or they put the accordion at the top and the primary button below the fold. The hierarchy has to be brutal.
Brutal is the word. One thing above the fold. Everything else is furniture.
Let me talk about the NFC card itself, because Daniel mentioned he has blank gold and silver cards he hasn't written to yet. The technical side is worth understanding because it explains exactly why his vendor lock-in instinct is correct.
Go on.
The cards use NXP chips, the NTAG two thirteen, two fifteen, or two sixteen. The two thirteen is the smallest, about a hundred forty-four bytes of storage. That sounds tiny, but it's enough for a URL. The URI record format stores the HTTPS prefix as a single byte, so a hundred forty-four character link fits on the smallest chip. You don't need the bigger ones for a simple redirect.
So the two dollar blank card is technically identical to the forty dollar branded one.
Functionally, yes. The chip is the same. The difference is what's written to it. A commercial NFC card service writes a redirect URL that points to their hosted profile portal. You edit your details on their website, they serve the page, they give you visit analytics. That's convenient. But the card is now a pointer to their service. If you stop paying, or they shut down, the card is dead. It's a plastic brick.
And the blank card, you write your own URL to it with a free app, and it points wherever you want. Your domain, your page, your rules.
The lock-in is architectural, not just commercial. It's not the plastic, it's the redirect. The blank tag is future-proof precisely because it's dumb. It doesn't know or care what service is behind it. It just holds a string of characters.
Dumb is the feature. That's the whole thesis.
And the environmental angle has a wrinkle here that I find funny. The same companies selling digital cards as the green alternative to paper will admit, if you dig into their own material, that NFC cards are worse than paper on materials. They contain metals and plastics that can't be recycled when the card dies. So the premium NFC card is not the environmentally friendly option. The environmentally friendly option is a QR code printed on nothing, or just your URL spoken aloud.
The greenest business card is no card at all. Which undercuts the entire market Daniel's skeptical of.
And the numbers on paper are actually striking. HiHello's research says one tree yields about twenty thousand average business cards. And eighty-eight percent of paper cards get thrown away within one week. Eighty-eight percent. So you cut down a tree, process it, print cards, hand them out, and within seven days almost nine out of ten are in a landfill or a recycling bin.
And the ones that survive are in boxes. Daniel mentioned his box. I've got a box. Everyone's got a box. The box is where business cards go to die.
The box is the retirement home for unfulfilled follow-up intentions.
That's grim. And accurate.
The global numbers are even more absurd. Something like a hundred billion cards printed a year. Five million trees. Two and a half billion gallons of water. And over five hundred sixty-nine million pounds of carbon dioxide from the paper manufacturing alone. Before a single card is handed to anyone.
So the environmental case against paper is solid. But the environmental case for NFC is not. Which leaves the QR code as the actual green option.
And the QR code has another advantage. It's ephemeral. You can print it on a badge, project it on a screen, show it on your phone. You don't have to carry a physical object at all.
Which brings up the social dimension. Because a physical card does something a QR code doesn't. It gives the other person a graceful way to not follow up.
That's a real thing. There's a thread from a while back where people were talking about this. Someone pointed out that if you hand someone a paper card and they decide not to contact you, it's not weird. They can just say they lost it. The card is a low-stakes social out.
But if you tap someone's phone with your NFC card and the link opens, there's no losing it. The thing is in their browser history. The social pressure is different.
And that's a genuine design tension. The frictionless digital handoff removes the escape hatch. For some people, that's a feature. For others, it's a reason to prefer the old ritual.
I think that's why the WhatsApp number works so well. It's not a demand. It's an invitation. You're not saying here's my entire professional existence, you're saying message me if you want to keep talking. The other person can ignore it and nobody's embarrassed.
And the regional angle Daniel raised is real. In China, everything runs through WeChat. If you hand someone a card with a WhatsApp link, it's useless. If you hand someone in Israel a card with a WeChat QR code, same thing. The card has to know where it is.
Which is why the nested accordion makes sense for the cross-geography networker. The top level is the local default. In Israel, WhatsApp. In China, WeChat. In the US, maybe LinkedIn or a phone number. And the collapsed options cover everywhere else.
But that's also where the complexity creeps back in. Because now you're maintaining regional versions of the same page. Or you're building a page that detects location and reorders itself. That's clever, but clever is the enemy.
Daniel said exactly that. The mistake is trying to be too clever. The one thing that works beats the five things that might.
Let me ground this in a concrete example. Say you're at a conference in Tel Aviv. You meet someone, the conversation goes well, you want to stay in touch. What's the actual sequence? You could pull out your phone, open WhatsApp, and hand it to them to type their number. That works. It's a little awkward but it works. Or you show them a QR code that opens a WhatsApp chat with your number pre-filled. One scan, they're in the chat. They send a message, maybe just their name and company. Done.
That's the frictionless version. And it's better than a card because the follow-up is already started. The card is the message.
And if you want something physical to hand over, the NFC card with the same WhatsApp link written to it. Tap, chat opens, same result. The physical object is just a delivery mechanism for the digital action.
So the design principle is: the card is a button, not a page. The card does one thing. The page is where the options live, and the page is something they visit later, if they want.
And that's the resolution to the whole Linktree problem. A Linktree is a destination. It's for people who already know who you are and want to find your stuff. It's not a networking tool. At a networking event, you're not trying to drive traffic to your portfolio. You're trying to start a conversation.
So the Linktree is the wrong tool for the job. Not because it's bad, but because it's built for a different moment.
Right. The Linktree is for your Instagram bio, where someone's already interested and wants to explore. The networking card is for a hallway conversation where someone's deciding whether to bother. Different psychology.
What about the event apps Daniel mentioned? The ones designed for organized events. Are those actually good?
They're good when the event uses one properly. If everyone's on the same platform, you can exchange details with a tap and it's all integrated. The problem is the fragmentation. Ten people at the event have ten different app cards. Nobody's downloading an app to get your contact info. There's a quote from one of those old threads that I think about a lot. Someone said, I'm not downloading an app for your information. Give me the piece of paper.
That's the whole thing in one sentence. The app requires the recipient to do work. The paper doesn't. The QR code doesn't. The NFC tap doesn't.
And the app also captures your data in someone else's system. Which is the same lock-in problem as the commercial NFC cards, just with more steps.
So what's the actual deliverable here? Daniel's going to an event Wednesday. He wants one thing to bring. What do we tell him?
I'd tell him to write a URL to one of those blank NFC cards. But not a Linktree. A single-purpose page with one button. The button opens a WhatsApp chat with a pre-filled message. Something like, Hi, it's the person from the event, so the follow-up starts itself.
And the page itself is his own domain, so it's portable. If he changes his mind later, he rewrites the card. No vendor, no subscription.
The page should be minimal. Maybe his name, a one-line description of what he does, and the button. That's it. No portfolio, no LinkedIn, no calendar. Those are for later.
The accordion idea can come later too. Once the connection is made, the follow-up message can include a link to the full page with all the options.
And if the event is somewhere WhatsApp isn't the default, he swaps the button. The card still points to his domain, but the page serves a different primary action based on where he is.
That's the nested options idea, just implemented as a sequence instead of a layout. The top level is the local default. The nested options are in the follow-up.
Which is more robust than an accordion, honestly. An accordion still shows all the options on one page. The sequence hides them until they're relevant.
So the accordion is a compromise. It's better than a flat Linktree, but it's still trying to do too much on one page.
The accordion works if you're committed to a single page. And I can see the appeal. One URL, works everywhere, people can drill down if they want. But the conversion data says the drill-down rarely happens. Most people tap the top thing or they leave.
So build the accordion with the top thing being the only thing that matters, and treat the rest as a bonus for the five percent who actually want it.
And if you're going to do the accordion, do it properly. The collapsed sections should be visually quiet. Small text, muted color, maybe a chevron. The primary action should be a big button. The contrast should make the choice for the user.
What about the energy-harvesting PCB card that was floating around recently? The one with the microcontroller on it.
That's a fun engineering project. Someone built an NFC card with an actual chip on it that harvests energy from the phone's field and does something. I think it cost about eight dollars a card at small volume. It's impressive, but it's a solution looking for a problem. You don't need a microcontroller to hand someone your contact info.
It's the opposite of the dumb card. It's the smart card, and smart is fragile.
Smart is also expensive. Eight dollars versus two dollars for the blank gold card. And the two dollar one is more reliable because there's less to go wrong.
The blank gold card is the AK-47 of networking. Cheap, simple, works everywhere.
That's a comparison I never thought I'd hear applied to business cards.
It fits. The commercial NFC card is the precision rifle. Expensive, finicky, impressive in the right hands. The blank card is the thing you can drop in mud and it still works.
And the QR code is even simpler. It's not even a physical object. It's a pattern you can display on anything.
So why carry the NFC card at all? Why not just show a QR code on your phone?
Because the NFC card is a physical object you can hand to someone. It has the ritual quality of the paper card without the environmental cost and without the information going stale.
And it's a conversation piece. A gold card that does something when you tap it is memorable in a way a QR code on a phone screen isn't.
That's the impressive part of Daniel's ask. The card can be both functional and memorable. The gold blank card with your own URL written to it is a better story than the forty dollar branded card, because you made it yourself.
The branded card says you paid someone. The blank card says you knew what you were doing.
And that's the kind of impression that sticks. Someone taps your gold card, it opens a clean page with one button, they tap the button, they're in a WhatsApp chat with you. The whole thing takes ten seconds. That's a better experience than any app.
Let me push on one thing. The pre-filled WhatsApp message. What should it actually say?
It should be short and specific. The recipient's phone opens WhatsApp with the message already typed. They just hit send. So the message should do the work of introducing you. Something like, Hi, we met at the event, this is Daniel, AI and automation consultant. The recipient doesn't have to type anything.
And the message becomes the record. It's in their chat history. They can scroll back later and find you. No contact card to save, no app to download.
The chat is the contact card. That's the insight. You're not exchanging data, you're starting a thread.
And the thread is searchable. If they remember they met someone at the event who does AI automation, they search their WhatsApp for automation and you show up.
That's a better retrieval system than a stack of cards in a drawer.
The box in the drawer is a graveyard. The chat history is a filing system.
So the design principle for the whole thing is: make the next step effortless. The card taps, the page loads, the button opens a chat, the message is pre-written. Each step requires one action from the recipient, and each action is obvious.
And if any step requires thought, you've lost them. The moment they have to decide what to do, they're gone.
That's the ten-second window. The page has to communicate its purpose instantly. One look, and they know what to do.
The page design is actually more important than the card design. The card is just a pointer. The page is where the conversion happens.
The page should be fast. Not just psychologically fast, technically fast. If it takes three seconds to load, that's thirty percent of your window gone. Static page, no heavy scripts, no analytics that block rendering.
It should work on a phone, obviously. The whole interaction is happening on a phone. If the page is designed for desktop, it's dead on arrival.
Mobile-first, one button, pre-filled message, fast load. That's the whole spec.
What about the person who doesn't use WhatsApp? The American who wants LinkedIn?
That's where the regional awareness comes in. If you're at a conference in the US, the primary action is probably LinkedIn. The pre-filled message becomes a LinkedIn connection request. Or it's a phone number with a pre-filled text message.
The mechanism changes, the principle doesn't. One action, pre-filled, effortless.
The nested options handle the edge cases. The person who wants your email can find it in the collapsed section. They're rare, but they exist.
The final answer to Daniel's question is something like: write your own URL to the blank gold card, point it at a single-purpose page with one primary action, make that action a pre-filled WhatsApp message or the local equivalent, and hide everything else behind a tiny collapsed section if you must.
The URL should be his own domain. Not a Linktree subdomain, not a commercial NFC portal. His domain, his control.
The domain is the thing that survives. The card can be rewritten. The page can be redesigned. The domain stays the same.
Which is the opposite of vendor lock-in. It's vendor independence. The whole stack is commodity hardware and open standards.
A two dollar card, a free writer app, a static page on a domain you own. Total cost of ownership is basically nothing.
The environmental footprint is about as low as a physical object can get. One card, reused indefinitely, no printing, no shipping, no waste.
The anti-box. It never goes in the drawer because it never becomes obsolete.
Unless you change your name. Then you rewrite the card.
Or your domain. But the domain is the thing you control, so you can redirect it.
The domain is the stable identifier. The card is just a physical shortcut to it.
Daniel's instinct was right all along. The blank gold card is the answer. He just needed the page design to go with it.
The page design is the part most people skip. They buy the card, write their Linktree to it, and wonder why nobody follows up.
Because the Linktree is a menu, and at a networking event, nobody's hungry yet. They're just deciding whether to stay in touch.
The card should be an appetizer, not a menu. One bite, and they want more.

Fine. The appetizer is the WhatsApp thread. The menu comes later, in the follow-up message, when they've already committed.
That's the sequence. Card, tap, chat, follow-up, menu. Each step earns the next.
The follow-up is where the real networking happens anyway. The card is just the excuse.
The card is the permission slip. It says, we met, we talked, it's okay to continue.
The pre-filled message removes the awkwardness of starting the conversation. The recipient doesn't have to think of what to say.
The message says it for them. Hi, we met at the event. That's the whole icebreaker.
The design is really about removing every possible point of friction between the handshake and the follow-up.
The follow-up is where the value is. The card is just the bridge.
Which brings me back to the environmental thing. The paper card is a bridge that gets thrown away. The NFC card is a bridge that stays in someone's pocket.
The QR code is a bridge with no physical form at all. It's the greenest option.
But the QR code is also the least memorable. You scan it, you move on. The gold card is a thing. It has weight.
The gold card is a statement. It says, I thought about this. I didn't just grab a stack of free cards from the print shop.
In a room full of people handing out paper, the person with the gold card that does something is the one people remember.
That's the impressive part. Not impressive like a tech demo, impressive like, this person has their act together.
The card is a signal. It says you understand how the interaction works.
The page reinforces it. One clean button, no clutter, no confusion. The whole experience says, I know what I'm doing.
That's worth more than any list of features.
Hilbert: Counting used to be my job. This was early nineties, I worked for a company that did trade show logistics. We'd count business cards. Not the cards themselves, the people who took them. Client would come back from a show with a shoebox full of cards, and we'd go through and tally how many were actually followed up on. It was never more than ten percent. Usually closer to five. The rest went in the shoebox, and the shoebox went in a closet.
Five percent follow-up. That's a brutal number.
Hilbert: That's with a physical card. Someone handed it to them, they put it in their pocket, they had every intention of calling. The intention dies on the drive home. The card becomes a reminder of something they didn't do, and nobody likes being reminded.
The card itself isn't the problem. It's the gap between receiving it and acting on it.
Hilbert: The gap is where everything dies. Your tap thing, the WhatsApp thing, it shrinks the gap to about four seconds. That's the whole trick. You're not asking them to remember anything. The phone does the remembering.
The pre-filled message means they don't even have to compose anything. They just hit send.
Hilbert: We used to recommend a follow-up call within forty-eight hours. That was the rule. If you didn't call within two days, you never would. Now the follow-up happens before they've left the conversation. That's not a card, that's a closing.
The card as closing move. That's what the paper card never was.
Hilbert: The paper card was an opening move, and it opened into nothing. The shoebox was full of openings.
The scale of the problem is even worse than the environmental numbers suggest. Not only are most cards thrown away, the ones that survive mostly represent failed connections.
Hilbert: I counted them. Thousands of cards. I'd sort them by company, by title, by region. The client thought the count mattered. It didn't. The follow-up rate was the same whether the card was from a CEO or a sales rep. The card didn't matter. The moment did.
The moment is the thing. The card is just a prop.
Hilbert: The prop is the wrong word. Props are for theater. The card was a receipt. Proof that a conversation happened. And receipts get filed and forgotten.
The digital card isn't a receipt, it's an action. The tap is the action.
Hilbert: The tap is the handshake, extended. The handshake ends, but the tap keeps going. It's already in their phone.
The phone is where they live. The shoebox is where cards go to die.
Hilbert: The shoebox was always the problem. We just didn't have a better place to put things back then. Now the better place is the chat history.
That's the whole episode in one line. The chat history is the new shoebox, except it's searchable and it doesn't make people feel guilty.
Hilbert: Searchable is the thing. You can't search a shoebox. You can search your phone. If someone remembers they met a guy who does automation, they type automation and there you are.
The retrieval problem was always the killer. The card was stored, but it was never retrievable.
Hilbert: Retrieval was my job. I was the retrieval system. A human database of who met who at which show. It was a terrible system. I was slow and I forgot things.
The digital card is partly a replacement for the human follow-up coordinator.
Hilbert: It's a replacement for the shoebox and the coordinator and the forty-eight hour rule. All of it collapses into one tap.
The tap is free. The coordinator cost money.
Hilbert: The coordinator cost a lot of money. I was not cheap.
I'm sure you were worth it.
Hilbert: I was adequate. The tap is better.
The tap doesn't take lunch breaks.
Hilbert: The tap doesn't take anything. It just sits there and works.
The design principle is really about compressing the entire follow-up pipeline into a single gesture.
Hilbert: That's what you said. The card is a button, not a page. I was just saying the button used to be a person.
The button used to be a person with a clipboard. Now it's a chip in a plastic card.
Hilbert: The chip is better than I was. I can admit that.
The chip also doesn't get tired of counting cards.
Hilbert: The chip never counted anything. It just holds a URL. The counting was the job, and the job was the problem. Too much counting, not enough connecting.
The real insight is that the technology didn't just replace the card, it replaced the whole follow-up system.
Hilbert: It replaced the shoebox. That's what it replaced. And good riddance.
The shoebox is gone, but the instinct to collect cards is still there. People still want a physical object.
Hilbert: The physical object is fine as long as it does something. The gold card does something. The paper card just sits there.
The paper card is a dead object. The gold card is a live one.
Hilbert: Live is the word. It reaches into the phone and starts something.
That's the design goal. A card that starts something, not a card that records something.
The recording is automatic. The chat history records everything.
Hilbert: The chat history is the best filing system we ever had. I would have killed for a chat history in ninety-three.

Hilbert: A spreadsheet and a lot of hope.
Hope is not a filing system.
Hilbert: No, it isn't.

The next step is the chat. The moment the message sends, the card has done its job. Everything after that is just conversation.
Which is what networking was always supposed to be.
